Small EMI or lower total cost? Compare two purchase quotes

Prepared / reviewed: · Educational information

A monthly instalment answers one question: how much is scheduled each month? It does not tell you the entire purchase cost. Compare the same purchase, with the same inclusions, before deciding what the numbers mean.

Add the payments you will actually make

For this simple comparison, add the down payment, every scheduled EMI and mandatory fees payable separately. Do not add a fee twice if it is already financed inside the EMI. A final balloon payment or a compulsory item missing from the quote must be checked separately.

Worked example: the smaller EMI costs more

Quote A has a ₹30,000 down payment, 24 instalments of ₹3,400, and ₹2,000 in separate fees: ₹1,13,600 in total. Quote B has the same down payment, 36 instalments of ₹2,500, and ₹1,000 in separate fees: ₹1,21,000. B has a smaller EMI but an entered total that is ₹7,400 higher. These are hypothetical quotes, not offers.

Compare equivalent inclusions

Check the product variant, taxes, insurance, warranty, accessories, discounts and delivery charges. Separate cash discounts from rewards that depend on spending, merchant category or later conditions. A headline “no-cost EMI” label is not a substitute for reading the quote.

A lower total is only one part of the decision

The calculator does not determine personal affordability, annual percentage rate, lender approval or suitability. A schedule that looks cheaper overall may still be difficult to maintain each month. Keep essential spending, existing obligations and irregular costs in view. Verify the written quote and ask the lender about unclear charges before accepting it.

Common questions

Does the smaller EMI always mean a cheaper purchase?

No. More instalments or different fees can increase the total. Compare the full schedule and equivalent inclusions.

Does this calculate the loan APR?

No. It adds the amounts entered. It does not model payment dates, lender accrual rules or all borrowing costs.
